Hoosier National Forest Forest Road 4602 Hemlock Bluff Circuit
Technical limestone canyon route through rare hemlock groves
Forest Road 4602 cuts through the Hemlock Bluff Recreation Area where limestone outcroppings create narrow passages that’ll scrape paint off anything wider than a Jeep. The route winds through old-growth hemlock groves—rare survivors in southern Indiana—before dropping into Salt Creek’s drainage where seasonal water crossings can turn nasty after spring rains. Pioneer Cemetery marks the halfway point, a sobering reminder of the homesteaders who tried to farm this unforgiving terrain.
This is genuine technical driving demanding high clearance and skid plates, with several spots requiring careful line choice through boulder fields. Stock trucks with good tires can handle it in dry conditions, but bring recovery gear and don’t attempt alone. Best tackled April through October when creek levels are manageable. The reward is access to some of Indiana’s wildest country, with dispersed camping opportunities and hiking trails that most Hoosiers never see.
