Shawnee National Forest River to River Trail Technical Section

Illinois' toughest technical challenge through Shawnee

Difficult

This technical section of the River to River Trail cuts through the heart of Shawnee National Forest, where Illinois’ most challenging terrain awaits. The route follows Forest Road 236 and connecting fire roads between Ferne Clyffe State Park and Hayes Creek Canyon, threading through rugged hollows that feel more like Arkansas than Illinois. Creek crossings at Big Muddy River and Hayes Creek can turn brutal after spring rains, while the climb over Draper’s Bluff tests traction on loose sandstone and shale.

Rated difficult due to seasonal creek fords and steep grades up to 18 percent on loose rock. High-clearance 4WD essential, with skid plates recommended for the rock gardens near Bell Smith Springs. Best tackled April through October when water levels drop. No permits required but check forest road closures during hunting season. You’ll earn panoramic views of the Ohio River valley and camp dispersed along ridgelines where you can see three states on clear nights.
