Beall Woods State Park Virgin Timber Circuit

Virgin forest from before the pioneers

Moderate

Beall Woods preserves the last 329 acres of virgin deciduous forest in Illinois, where 120-foot tulip trees and ancient oaks create a canopy unchanged since pioneer days. The backcountry circuit follows old logging roads and fire breaks through sections never touched by axe or saw, passing the Coffee Creek bridge and winding through bottomland areas that flood seasonally. The route includes a challenging ford at Keensburg Creek and navigates through areas where massive fallen giants create natural obstacles, requiring careful navigation around centuries-old deadfall.

Rated moderate for soft soil conditions and seasonal flooding, though the real challenge comes from navigating around protected root systems and fragile understory. High-clearance 2WD sufficient during dry periods, but 4WD recommended during wet seasons when bottomland sections become boggy. Best visited late summer through early winter when soil firms up and flooding subsides. No permits required but stay on designated routes to protect this irreplaceable ecosystem. Camping available at nearby Red Hills State Park. This is driving through living history — a glimpse of Illinois as it existed before European settlement.
