Parque Nacional Cofre de Perote Base Camp
Perched in pine forest at nearly 13,000 feet, this established camp serves climbers and overlanders seeking Mexico’s high country. Twenty-five sites scattered among mature pines, each with fire ring and basic table. Vault toilets and a hand-pump well provide the essentials. Nights drop below freezing even in summer — bring serious cold-weather gear.
Access via a rough 8-kilometer dirt road from Highway 140. High-clearance recommended, though passenger cars make it in dry conditions. The final push to Cofre de Perote’s 4,282-meter summit starts from camp. Reserve through CONANP during peak climbing season.
