Volcán Nevado de Colima Base Camp
Rocky, exposed camping area on the north slope of Nevado de Colima at treeline. Space for maybe 8 vehicles max on relatively flat ground, but zero amenities — just volcanic scree, thin air, and expansive views across Jalisco. Temps drop below freezing most nights year-round. Strong winds common, especially afternoons. Popular with climbers making summit attempts at dawn.
Final 8 kilometers require 4WD with good clearance — loose rock, steep grades, and exposure. Road deteriorates significantly above 10,000 feet. Winter access often impossible due to snow and ice. No water, no shelter, no cell service. Bring everything, pack out everything. Weather changes fast at this elevation.
