Scoresby Sound Jameson Land Mining Road

This 42-kilometer technical route follows a decaying mining road from Ittoqqortoormiit settlement deep into Jameson Land’s uranium-rich interior, crossing the Schuchert River twice and threading between towering basalt cliffs. Built in the 1950s for uranium exploration, the road deteriorates into a boulder-strewn track after the second river crossing, with sections completely washed out by spring melt. The route passes three abandoned prospect camps and offers unmatched views across Scoresby Sound, the world’s largest fjord system.

This is difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and proper recovery gear – winches aren’t luxury items here. The river crossings can be treacherous during snowmelt season, and weather changes fast. Best attempted July through early September with a well-equipped 4WD, spare parts, and satellite communication. The reward is access to some of Greenland’s most dramatic wilderness and excellent Arctic wildlife viewing, including the world’s densest Arctic fox populations.
