Volcán de Colima Base Camp Trailhead
The trailhead sits at 11,200 feet on the flanks of Volcán de Fuego, Mexico’s most active volcano. There’s a rough parking area, pit toilets, and registration station where you check in before attempting the summit. The volcano is genuinely active — check current conditions with CENAPRED before heading up. Views across the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt are massive on clear days.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD for the final 8 kilometers of rocky volcanic road from La Becerrera. The road is steep, loose, and technical in spots. Altitude hits hard — most folks camp here to acclimatize before summit attempts. Trail closed during periods of high volcanic activity.
