Nevado de Toluca Crater Lake

Point of Interest

The Nevado de Toluca offers one of Mexico’s most accessible high-altitude adventures — you can literally drive to 15,000 feet and park at the rim of an ancient volcanic crater containing two jewel-blue lakes, Lago del Sol and Lago de la Luna. The road is paved most of the way up, turning to decent gravel for the final climb. On clear days, the views stretch across central Mexico to distant volcanos. The thin air hits hard — take it slow and stay hydrated.

Gates typically open 6am-5pm and may close during bad weather or high winds. Weekend crowds can be intense, especially around the lakes themselves. Early morning visits offer the best light and fewer people. The road is steep but manageable for most vehicles with adequate power — just watch for overheating on the climb up.
