Pico de Orizaba Base Camp Refugio

Established Campground

Mexico’s premier mountaineering base camp sits just below the Jamapa Glacier at the foot of Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl), the country’s highest peak at 5,636 meters. The stone refugio sleeps 40 in bunk-style accommodations with basic cooking facilities and pit toilets. Nights are brutally cold year-round — this is serious alpine territory where weather changes fast and altitude sickness is common above 4,000 meters.

Access via rough 4WD track from Tlachichuca requires high-clearance vehicle and experienced mountain driving. The final approach crosses loose volcanic scree and can be impassable after storms. Climbing permits required for summit attempts. Most overlanders use this as a high-altitude acclimatization stop rather than attempting the technical glacier routes above.
