Fairy Meadows Jeep Track — Raikot Bridge to Tato below Nanga Parbat
Cliff-hanger road to the Killer Mountain
Few roads have a reputation like this one. The track leaves the Karakoram Highway at Raikot Bridge and climbs steeply up the Raikot Gorge, a single lane carved into the cliff, with the river hundreds of feet below. Rockfall is common, and there are no guardrails. Landslides or washouts can close it overnight. After about 16 km you reach the village of Tato. From there it is a few hours’ hike to Fairy Meadows, where Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) rises straight over the pine meadows. Local jeeps do the drive. They are modified Suzukis and Hilux trucks, with drivers who have done it for decades.
It is rated Difficult, and the honest reason is the exposure, not rock crawling. The surface is loose gravel and rock, and passing happens only at widened pull-outs, so uphill traffic has right of way. A short-wheelbase high-clearance 4×4 is the minimum, with good brakes and an unflappable driver. Be aware that a local jeep association controls access and most visitors ride in local vehicles. Ask before planning to take your own. Late May through September is the usual season, and snow can close it outside that. Cell service is spotty and there is no fuel above the highway, so fill up in Chilas or Gilgit. Check local conditions before you go. You get a front-row seat to the Killer Mountain and a drive you will not forget. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4Runner or Land Cruiser do the Fairy Meadows jeep track?
Mechanically a stock high-clearance 4x4 can handle the surface, but the track is a narrow, exposed shelf with tight switchbacks where a long wheelbase is a liability. Local short-wheelbase jeeps are the norm, and visitors are generally expected to hire one at Raikot Bridge rather than drive their own, so confirm locally before you plan around a private rig.
Is the Fairy Meadows jeep track open in winter?
Not reliably. Snow and slides close the upper track and Fairy Meadows itself through winter, and the usable window is roughly May to September. Monsoon rain and glacial melt can still trigger landslides and washouts, so check conditions with locals in Chilas or at Raikot Bridge.
Do I need a permit or pay a fee to drive to Tato?
The track is managed by the local community and Gilgit-Baltistan authorities, and there is no single overland permit you pick up in advance. Expect to pay for the jeep ride, and possibly local entry or conservation fees, in cash. Rules change, so verify current requirements and prices before you go.
What is the hardest part of the Fairy Meadows jeep track?
The exposed middle stretch above the Raikot Gorge, a single-lane shelf with no guardrails and a long drop on the outside edge. Passing oncoming jeeps means someone backs up to a wide spot, and rockfall and stream runoff make the surface unpredictable. It's about 16 km and takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Can I drive all the way to Fairy Meadows, and what should I bring?
No. The jeep track ends at Tato, and Fairy Meadows is a further hike of several hours on foot, so pack light and bring layers for 8,900 ft. Cell service is spotty, so carry cash, fill your tank before leaving Chilas, and tell someone your plan.
