Hraunfossar and Barnafoss — Lava Spring Waterfalls West of Húsafell
Hraunfossar isn’t one big drop. It’s a long wall of clear spring water leaking out of the edge of the Hallmundarhraun lava field and spilling into the glacial, milky-blue Hvítá river. Dozens of small streams run through the rock for several hundred meters. A few minutes upstream, the Hvítá squeezes into a narrow, loud basalt gorge at Barnafoss. Short walking paths and viewing platforms connect both, and there’s a parking area with a café and restrooms. Stay behind the rails. The rock is slick and the river is cold and fast.
It sits on paved Road 518, roughly 10 km west of Húsafell, so it’s an easy add-on once you roll off the gravel of Kaldidalur (Road 550). Summer afternoons bring tour buses. Early morning or evening gives you the place nearly to yourself and softer light on the lava. Services and parking rules change, so verify ahead. Have a dirty day.
