Húsafell Campsite — Western Highlands Gateway at the Kaldidalur Terminus

Established Campground

Húsafell sits in a birch and pine forest in Borgarfjörður, right where Kaldidalur (F550) drops off the highland pass between Langjökull and Ok. The campsite is part of the Húsafell service area. It has toilets, showers, drinking water and trash service, and the village has a swimming pool with hot tubs, a small shop and a restaurant. After a day of washboard and wind on the highland road, a hot soak is what you’re here for. Pitches are grassy and sheltered by trees, which is rare in Iceland. It gets crowded in July and August, so show up early on weekends.

Access is easy. Road 518 and Route 50 are paved right up to the village, and the trail itself delivers you to the doorstep from the south. Kaldidalur is normally only open in summer, so the season here lines up with the pass. Fires are not a free-for-all in Iceland, and campgrounds set their own rules, so ask at reception. Prices and opening dates change, so verify ahead on the official site. Have a dirty day.
