Kaldidalur Road 550 — Highland Pass Tent-Only Wild Camping
Kaldidalur, the Cold Valley, is a gravel highland pass on Route 550 that runs between Langjökull and the Ok volcano. It’s a stark, treeless stretch of black lava, gravel and wind, with glacier views on both sides. The ground is exposed and the weather swings fast, so bring stakes that bite and a tent that can handle gusts. Nothing out here has been built for campers: no toilets, no water, no fire rings, no tables. Pack out everything, including your toilet paper.
Read this part before you park. Iceland’s nature conservation law limits wild camping. Tents are generally tolerated on uncultivated land outside protected areas. Camper vans, trailers and car-based camping are supposed to use designated campsites, and Þingvellir National Park at the southern end bans camping outside its official sites. Landowners and rangers enforce this, and fines are real. Don’t camp on fragile moss, and ask permission wherever land looks used. Route 550 is gravel, with washboard, loose sections and cold fords or runoff in some spots. It usually opens in early summer and closes with snow, so check road.is before you go. Verify the current rules with the Environment Agency of Iceland. Have a dirty day.
