Banner County Badlands Technical Loop
Nebraska's most technical rock crawling
Nebraska’s forgotten corner harbors terrain that’ll humble Colorado veterans — Banner County’s badlands throw up rock ledges, loose shale climbs, and off-camber descents that demand full attention. This 16-mile technical loop connects three separate canyon systems via rancher roads that haven’t seen maintenance since the Dust Bowl. The crux comes at Devil’s Staircase, a series of fractured sandstone ledges that require precise wheel placement and a spotter to avoid panel damage on the narrow squeeze between boulders.
Expect to use 4-low, lockers, and aggressive tires — this isn’t beginner country. Recovery points front and rear become essential when the loose shale gives way on steep sections. No permits or fees, but respect private land boundaries marked with orange paint. Best tackled in dry weather between September and November when summer heat breaks and winter storms haven’t turned clay into impassable slick. You’ll earn views across three states and bragging rights about conquering Nebraska’s most technical 4×4 challenge.
