Halsey National Forest Dispersed Area

Hand-planted forest in the heart of the sandhills with scattered camping opportunities among the pines.

This 90,000-acre forest was hand-planted starting in 1902, making it the largest hand-planted forest in the US. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout most of the forest, with popular spots along the sandy two-tracks that wind between the pine plantations. No facilities, but plenty of space to spread out and decent firewood availability from deadfall.

Access is via several forest roads off Highway 2. The sandy soil drains well but can be soft after rain — stick to established tracks. Fire restrictions apply during dry periods. The contrast of pine forest in the middle of grassland makes this a unique camping experience in the sandhills region.
