Victoria Springs State Recreation Area

Crystal-clear spring-fed swimming hole and campground in the Nebraska Sandhills, a hidden gem for overlanders exploring the remote backroads.

This 32-acre state recreation area wraps around a pristine spring that pumps out 3 million gallons of crystal-clear water daily, creating a surprising swimming oasis in the middle of ranch country. The small campground has 20 sites scattered among mature cottonwoods, with basic facilities and a boat ramp for the small lake. It’s dead quiet most weekdays, but can fill up with locals on summer weekends.

Access is via 8 miles of maintained gravel road from Highway 97 — the kind of washboard that’ll rattle your teeth but won’t strand a stock pickup. No cell service, no camp host, just you and the springs. The water stays a constant 68°F year-round, making it swimmable even when the air’s crisp.
