Molokai Forest Reserve Ridge Road

Into Molokai's last native cloud forests

Difficult

The Molokai Forest Reserve Ridge Road ascends the island’s mountainous backbone through native Hawaiian rainforest, climbing from dry ranchland into cloud-shrouded peaks where endemic plants thrive in perpetual mist. This network of maintenance roads serves the island’s watershed protection efforts, accessing remote forest areas where Hawaiian tree snails once flourished and native birds still nest in undisturbed koa groves. The route reaches elevations above 4,000 feet, offering rare glimpses of Molokai’s north shore sea cliffs and neighboring islands through breaks in the vegetation.

Difficult terrain with steep grades, loose soil when wet, and narrow passages between native vegetation. Modified 4WD with low range essential, plus tire chains during winter months when mud becomes impassable. The Nature Conservancy manages sections requiring advance permission and guided access only. Best attempted during dry season (May-September) when roads are most stable. Bring layered clothing for temperature changes and respect for sensitive ecosystems. No camping allowed, but day trips provide access to some of Hawaii’s last intact native forests and critical habitat areas.
