Little Missouri National Grassland Loop

Ranch roads through America's largest grassland

Moderate

This 85-mile loop cuts through the heart of America’s largest national grassland, where working cattle ranches share space with wandering bison herds and the occasional oil derrick. Starting near Watford City, the route follows primitive ranch roads and two-tracks through the Little Missouri River valley, passing the historic Elkhorn Ranch site where Teddy Roosevelt once punched cattle. The challenging section drops into Bullion Butte where flash floods have carved deep gullies that’ll test your diff locks.

Moderate difficulty with several technical creek crossings that can turn nasty after thunderstorms—check conditions at McKenzie District office before heading out. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but aggressive tread helps in the gumbo clay that turns slick as snot when wet. Best from June through October when creek levels drop. No permits needed, but respect private land boundaries marked by the ubiquitous barbed wire. You’ll gain appreciation for the tough bastards who settled this country, plus some of the darkest night skies in America.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4WD pickup handle this trail?

Yes, a stock 4WD with decent ground clearance will do fine. The ranch roads can get rutted and muddy after rain, but nothing technical.

Is the trail passable in spring or after heavy rain?

Avoid this trail in spring thaw or within 24 hours of heavy rain. The clay-based prairie soil turns into wheel-sucking gumbo that'll strand you for days.

Do I need any permits to drive the grassland loop?

No permits required for the designated routes. Stay on established roads and trails - the grassland is open for dispersed camping and day use.

What's the most challenging part of this 85-mile loop?

River crossings can be tricky during snowmelt or after storms, and some sections cross active ranch land where you might encounter cattle on the road.

How far can I go without cell service and where should I fuel up?

Expect spotty to no cell service for most of the loop. Fill up in Watford City before starting - it's your last reliable fuel stop for the entire 85-mile route.
