Rough Lock Falls Road

Technical limestone crawl to historic falls.

Difficult

Rough Lock Falls Road splits off from Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway and immediately gets serious — jagged limestone slabs, off-camber ledges, and tight switchbacks that’ll test your spotter’s patience. The payoff comes at Rough Lock Falls, where Spearfish Creek cascades over terraced limestone into pools that old-timers used as a “rough lock” — dragging logs behind wagons to slow their descent. Abandoned mining equipment from the 1876 gold rush still rusts in the aspens above the falls.

This is legitimate technical terrain requiring skid plates, rock rails, and preferably 35-inch tires minimum. Summer’s your window — snow closes this route from November through May, and spring runoff makes the creek crossings sketchy. No permits, but respect the private mining claims scattered through here. Camping’s limited to established sites only. It’s a short but punishing route that separates pretenders from the real deal in Wyoming’s slice of the Black Hills.
