Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this restored fire lookout crowns Black Butte’s 6,325-foot summit with unobstructed views of Mount Shasta, Castle Lake, and the Trinity Alps. The 75-foot tower features original furnishings and interpretive displays about fire detection history. A moderate hiking trail leads to the summit through mixed conifer forest, making this one of the more accessible fire lookouts in Northern California.
The trailhead sits at road’s end after a decent gravel forest road suitable for most vehicles. Summer crowds can be heavy on weekends, but weekday visits offer solitude. Snow typically blocks access from November through May, and afternoon thunderstorms are common during fire season.
