This 1936 stone observation tower crowns Mount Constitution at 2,407 feet, the highest peak in the San Juan Islands. The 52-foot Civilian Conservation Corps-built structure provides panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains, Cascade Range, Mount Baker, and the island-dotted waters of Puget Sound. On clear days, you can see Mount Rainier to the south and the Canadian Coast Mountains to the north.
Access requires a ferry ride to Orcas Island, then a winding 6-mile drive up Mount Constitution Road through old-growth forest. The road is paved but steep with tight switchbacks. Moran State Park surrounds the area with multiple campgrounds. Summer brings crowds and limited parking at the summit. The tower is open year-round, but winter weather can make the road treacherous.
