Morro Rock

Ancient volcanic plug rising 576 feet from Morro Bay, visible for miles along the Central Coast and accessible via causeway.

This massive volcanic plug dominates the skyline of Morro Bay, rising straight up from sea level like California’s version of Devils Tower. The 576-foot monolith is the most recognizable of the Nine Sisters volcanic peaks and serves as a landmark for travelers along Highway 1. You can drive right up to its base via a causeway, where there’s parking and interpretive signs explaining its 23-million-year geological history.

The rock itself is off-limits to climbing (protected nesting habitat for peregrine falcons), but the surrounding area offers great photography angles and bird watching. Best light is early morning or late afternoon when the rock glows against the ocean backdrop. Can get crowded on weekends, but there’s usually parking available.
