White Tank Mountains Regional Park Loop
Petroglyphs and granite in Phoenix's backyard
The White Tank Mountains rise like a fortress from the Sonoran Desert floor, their white granite faces carved with thousand-year-old Hohokam petroglyphs. This 12-mile loop winds through the heart of Maricopa County’s largest regional park, threading narrow washes between towering saguaro cacti and past Competition Hill’s technical rock gardens. The route connects the park’s main road network with backcountry trails that lead to hidden tanks (natural water basins) carved into the granite by flash floods over millennia.
This is moderate high-clearance territory with some technical spots around the Competition Hill area that’ll test your line choice and traction control. Stock 4WD with skid plates recommended, especially during summer monsoons when washes can turn treacherous. Best tackled October through April when temps stay reasonable for recovery work. Park entry fee required, but dispersed camping isn’t allowed—this is a day trip from Phoenix metro. You’ll earn desert solitude just 30 miles from downtown, plus some of the best petroglyphs in central Arizona.
