Gauley River Road
Remote whitewater country backcountry route
Following the legendary Gauley River downstream from Summersville Lake, this rugged forest service road winds through some of West Virginia’s most remote backcountry. The route passes abandoned homesteads from the early 1900s and crosses multiple tributaries before reaching the famous Class V rapids section that draws kayakers from around the world. Key waypoints include the old Carnifex Ferry battlefield site and several primitive camping spots along Peters Creek.
This moderate trail requires high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and rocky sections, especially after spring rains when the tributaries run high. Best tackled from late spring through early fall when water levels are manageable. No permits required, but fuel up in Summersville as it’s the last reliable services for 40 miles. The payoff is pristine wilderness camping and some of the best trout fishing in the Mountain State, plus bragging rights for running one of West Virginia’s most challenging backcountry routes.
