Pamir Highway (M41) – Tajikistan Section

World's second-highest international highway

Extreme

The M41 Pamir Highway climbs from Dushanbe through the Gorno-Badakhshan region, reaching 4,655 meters at Ak-Baital Pass—the highest point on any international highway. This Soviet-era road parallels Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor through the Pamirs, passing through Khorog where hot springs steam beside the Panj River, and continuing to Murghab—a high-altitude town that feels like the edge of the world. The route includes technical sections through Koi-Tezek Pass and the notorious washboard stretch between Alichur and Murghab.

Rated Extreme due to brutal altitude, weather exposure, and frequent road damage from frost heave and landslides. Requires expedition-grade 4WD, spare parts, emergency food/water, and GBAO permit plus Tajik visa. Best June-September when high passes are passable, though conditions change rapidly. No fuel available for 300+ kilometer stretches. Cell service exists only in major towns. This is overlanding at its most challenging—crossing one of Earth’s most remote mountain ranges where Marco Polo sheep still roam.
