Florida National Scenic Trail – Big Cypress Section
Into the heart of the River of Grass
The Big Cypress section of the Florida National Scenic Trail cuts 31 miles through genuine Everglades backcountry, where cypress domes rise from sawgrass prairies and panthers still hunt undisturbed. This isn’t a maintained road – it’s a primitive route that follows fire roads, hiking trails, and unmarked paths through terrain that floods seasonally and stays muddy year-round. During dry season, you’ll navigate through ankle-deep muck; during wet season, sections become impassable swamps that’ll drown anything without snorkel equipment.
This is difficult terrain that demands high-clearance 4WD, preferably with lifted suspension and mud tires. Bring GPS navigation, recovery gear, extra fuel, and camping supplies – cell service is non-existent and help is hours away. Best tackled during dry season (December through April) when water levels drop and the mosquitoes ease up slightly. The reward is access to one of Florida’s last true wilderness areas, where you can camp under star-filled skies and experience the Everglades as few people ever do.
