Tiger Bay State Forest Technical Loop
Florida's inland sand trap for serious 4x4 enthusiasts
Tiger Bay’s technical loop pushes through some of Florida’s deepest sand, where old logging roads disappear into palmetto thickets and cypress heads that flood unpredictably. The notorious “Devil’s Bathtub” section drops vehicles into sugar-sand bowls that have swallowed axles and challenged winches, while seasonal rains turn hardpan into boot-sucking clay. Fire roads crisscross this 27,000-acre forest, but GPS becomes essential when trails vanish under standing water or recent burns.
Expert difficulty with modified 4WD, winch, and recovery gear absolutely required – multiple vehicles recommended for safety. Aired-down tires essential for sand flotation, but beware of sharp palmetto stumps hiding beneath. Summer brings brutal heat, mosquitoes, and afternoon thunderstorms that flood low sections for weeks. Winter offers the best conditions but hunting seasons restrict access. No permits required for day use, dispersed camping allowed with proper precautions. This isn’t a beginner’s trail – Tiger Bay has humbled plenty of confident drivers and earned its reputation as Florida’s inland proving ground.
