Sandhill Trail – Osceola National Forest
Deep sand gauntlet through Florida's pine barrens
The Sandhill Trail follows old logging roads through Osceola National Forest’s longleaf pine ecosystem, where sugar sand can swallow tires faster than a Florida sinkhole. This 38-mile network of interconnected trails winds past Sandhill Lake and through turkey oak ridges that once fed massive turpentine operations. The notorious Sand Hill Road section lives up to its name – loose sand that’ll have you airing down or walking out, depending on your skill and tire choice.
Difficult rating due to deep sand sections that catch even experienced drivers off-guard. Stock 4WD with aggressive tread required, aired-down tires recommended. Trail can be impassable after heavy rains when sand turns to quicksand-like soup. No permits needed, decent cell coverage near trailheads fades quickly. Open year-round but best October through March when humidity drops. Hunt season (November-January) brings increased traffic from serious outdoorsmen who know these woods like their own backyard.
