Loop Road – Big Cypress National Preserve
Gator-infested limestone through Florida's swamp heart
Loop Road cuts a muddy swath through Big Cypress National Preserve, where the Everglades meet true backcountry Florida. This 27-mile limestone and shell road runs from US-41 to connect back at Monroe Station, threading between cypress domes and sawgrass prairies where panthers still prowl. The infamous Gator Hook section floods regularly, turning the trail into a water crossing that’ll test your diff seals and your nerve when a 12-foot gator decides to share the road.
Moderate difficulty with seasonal flooding that can strand vehicles for hours or days. High-clearance 4WD essential during wet season (June-November), though dry season allows careful stock vehicles through. No permits required, but cell service dies after the first few miles. Dispersed camping allowed with backcountry permit. Best tackled October through April when water levels drop and mosquitoes calm down. You’ll earn bragging rights and a deep understanding of why Florida crackers were so damn tough.
