Drakensberg Sani Pass

The roof of southern Africa

Difficult

Sani Pass doesn’t mess around — it’s a 9-kilometer climb up the Drakensberg escarpment with gradients hitting 1:3 and hairpin bends that’ll have you three-pointing your way to Lesotho. The route starts at the Sani Pass Hotel in KwaZulu-Natal and claws its way up through rock faces and sheer drops to the highest pub in Africa at the top. Every turn reveals another gut-clenching view into the valleys below, and the Lesotho border post sits at 2,876 meters where the air gets thin and the weather changes fast.

This is strictly 4×4 territory — no chance for anything less. Stock vehicles with low range and good brakes handle it fine, but respect the weather windows. Summer rains make the pass treacherous, winter brings snow and ice. You’ll need your passport for the border crossing and cash for the pub at the top. The reward is standing on the roof of southern Africa with views that stretch to the horizon, plus bragging rights for conquering one of the continent’s most infamous mountain passes.
