Ennedi Circuit
Saharan sandstone labyrinth with ancient secrets
The Ennedi Plateau is Chad’s best-kept secret — a sandstone maze rising from the Sahara like a lost world. This circuit winds through towering formations, slot canyons, and hidden guelta pools where crocodiles still survive in the desert. Navigation is by GPS and local guide only; the ancient caravan routes are unmarked tracks through shifting sand and volcanic rock. Key waypoints include the Aloba Arch, Terkei pools, and countless galleries of Neolithic rock art depicting elephants and giraffes from when this was savanna.
Expert-level expedition requiring serious preparation. Minimum two vehicles, satellite communication, and local guides mandatory — this isn’t a place to wing it. Fuel caches, 200+ liters of water per vehicle, and spare everything. Dry season only (November-March) when temperatures drop below furnace levels. The reward is stepping into one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas, where ancient rock art tells stories older than civilization and you might camp weeks without seeing another human track.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of vehicle modifications are absolutely required for the Ennedi Circuit?
You need a heavily modified expedition 4WD with long-range fuel tanks, sand tires, recovery gear, and GPS navigation systems. Stock vehicles will not survive this remote Saharan route.
Is the Ennedi Circuit accessible during summer months?
No, summer temperatures exceed 120°F (50°C) making travel extremely dangerous. The trail is only passable November through March when temperatures are more manageable.
What permits do I need to enter the Ennedi region in Chad?
You need a Chad tourist visa, vehicle carnet de passage, and special permits from Chad's Ministry of Tourism. All paperwork must be arranged well in advance through N'Djamena.
What's the most challenging section of the circuit?
The deep sand traverses between rock formations where GPS becomes critical - many areas look identical and it's easy to get completely lost. Soft sand sections can trap even experienced drivers for hours.
How much fuel range do I need for the full Ennedi Circuit?
You need minimum 800-mile range with no refueling options on the circuit itself. Most expeditions carry 150+ gallons in multiple tanks since the nearest fuel is back in Fada.
