Magadan-Ust Nera Winter Road (R504 Extension)
Into Siberia's frozen heart via Stalin's road
This 460-kilometer winter-only extension of the notorious Kolyma Highway punches deeper into the Siberian wilderness than most mortals have business going. The route follows frozen rivers and mining roads established by Soviet prisoners, passing through Susuman and the abandoned gold camps that dot this corner of hell. You’ll cross the Indigirka River on ice thick enough to support ore trucks, navigate around massive placer mining operations, and camp in the shadows of Stalin-era prison barracks at Kadykchan.
Extreme difficulty — this is life-or-death territory requiring expedition-level preparation. February through April only, when temperatures hit -40°F and the ice roads are solid. You need arctic survival gear, satellite communication, and enough fuel for 600+ miles with no services. The gold mining companies that maintain these roads don’t want tourists, but they won’t stop you. Reward is experiencing the most remote corner of inhabited Russia and understanding why they called this route the “Road of Bones.”
