Manastash Ridge Road
High desert to mountain forest ridge runner
Manastash Ridge Road cuts a meandering line through the high country between the Yakima Valley and the Cascade foothills, offering some of the best ridge running in central Washington. This 40-mile dirt road climbs from sagebrush flats near Ellensburg up through ponderosa pine forests, cresting at nearly 6,000 feet with sweeping views of Mount Rainier and the Stuart Range. The route follows old logging roads and cattle trails, passing through a landscape that shifts from high desert to mountain forest in a matter of miles.
Moderate difficulty with some steep, rocky sections that demand high clearance and 4WD in wet conditions. The road can get muddy and rutted during spring snowmelt and fall rains, but summer and early fall offer excellent conditions for stock 4WD vehicles. No permits required, but you’re crossing a mix of state and private timber lands—respect gates and signs. Dispersed camping is available in several spots along the ridge, and the route connects to dozens of other forest roads for extended exploration. Cell service is nonexistent once you’re up on the ridge.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4Runner do this trail?
Yes, a stock 4Runner handles this trail fine. High-clearance 2WD can make it, but 4WD is recommended for the steeper rocky sections and better traction on loose surfaces.
Is the trail open in winter?
No, snow typically closes the higher elevations from November through May. Best access is June through October when the ridge is clear of snow.
Do I need permits for Manastash Ridge Road?
No permits required. This runs through Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife land with open public access.
What's the hardest part of this trail?
The steepest rocky climbs around mile 15-20 where you gain most of the elevation. Loose rock and ruts can challenge traction, especially when wet.
