Sand Lake Recreation Area OHV Trail System
Coastal dunes meet forest single-track
Sand Lake’s 1,000 acres of open dunes roll right up to dense coastal forest, creating one of Oregon’s most diverse OHV experiences. The main loop threads through towering sand bowls where riders disappear over 100-foot faces, then ducks into tight forest corridors lined with Sitka spruce and shore pine. The notorious “Whoop-de-dos” section—a mile-long series of natural sand moguls—separates casual riders from those who came to get beat up.
This is legitimate sand riding that’ll humble street tires and reward paddle treads, though stock 4WDs with aired-down tires can handle the perimeter trails. Summer weekends bring crowds and dust; shoulder seasons offer cleaner riding but wetter conditions in the forest sections. No permits needed, but bring recovery gear—soft sand eats vehicles. The payoff is camping steps from rideable dunes with ocean breeze and some of Oregon’s most technical sand terrain.
