Nestucca River Road — Coast Range Corridor to Beaver via Pacific City Backroads

Oregon's quiet coast range river run.

Moderate

Punch inland from Pacific City on Brooten Road, cross into the Siuslaw National Forest, and the Nestucca River Road starts earning your attention fast. The pavement drops away and the route winds northeast along the Nestucca River through a corridor of old Douglas fir, red alder, and dense sword fern understory for roughly 35 miles before spitting you out near Beaver on Highway 22. Several primitive campsites sit along the river — some right at the waterline. The road climbs over a low Coast Range divide and descends through working timber land, so expect logging trucks on weekdays and plan around them.

This is a moderate, largely unpaved forest route — a stock high-clearance rig handles it easily in dry conditions. Spring and early summer bring the most dramatic river levels and wildflower understory, but also the most mud. The road can get soft and rutted after heavy rain; Oregon coast weather is unpredictable, so always check conditions before committing. No permit needed, no fee for dispersed camping on national forest land. Fuel up in Pacific City or Tillamook before heading in. Cell service is spotty at best and gone entirely for long stretches. This road rewards slow travel — it’s not a checkpoint run.
