Blue Mountains Backcountry Trail

Oregon's forgotten wilderness backcountry

Moderate

Deep in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, this route follows old logging and mining roads through some of Oregon’s most remote country. The trail winds past abandoned gold mines near Granite and climbs through dense stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir to high alpine meadows. Watch for the tricky creek crossing at Phillips Creek — it’s deeper than it looks and the approach is sketchy when wet.

Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring high-clearance 4WD with good ground clearance for rocky sections and water crossings. Snow can linger into June at higher elevations, making July through September the sweet spot. No permits needed but fuel up in Baker City — it’s a long way to the next gas station. You’ll earn solitude most overlanders never see, plus killer camping spots with mountain views that’ll make you forget the coast exists.
