Peyto Lake Viewpoint

Iconic turquoise alpine lake viewpoint accessible via short hike from the Icefields Parkway.

This world-famous viewpoint overlooks the brilliant turquoise waters of Peyto Lake, shaped like a wolf’s head when viewed from above. The main viewpoint requires a 10-minute uphill walk from the parking area, but the reward is one of the most photographed scenes in the Canadian Rockies. The lake’s distinctive color comes from glacial rock flour suspended in the water, creating an otherworldly blue-green hue that’s most vibrant in summer.

The parking area sits right off the Icefields Parkway and can get absolutely mobbed with tour buses during peak season (July-August). Early morning or late evening visits offer better chances for solitude and dramatic lighting. Winter access is possible but requires snowshoes or skis for the trail portion.
