The Lighthouse Trail trailhead sits at the heart of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, providing access to the most famous hike in the Texas Panhandle. A large gravel parking area accommodates trucks, trailers, and overland rigs, though it fills quickly on weekends. The trail itself is a 5.8-mile round trip to the park’s signature red rock formation — a 310-foot pillar that’s been the canyon’s calling card for over a century. Minimal shade and no water along the route, so start early and pack plenty of fluids.
The trailhead includes pit toilets and interpretive signs explaining the geology of this 120-mile-long gash in the High Plains. Summer temperatures can hit 100°F with little relief, making spring and fall the prime seasons. The trail surface is mostly packed earth with some rocky sections, manageable in good hiking boots. Park entry fee required, but the trailhead itself has no additional charges.
