Caddo Lake State Park

East Texas swamp camping among towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, with canoe trails through America's largest natural lake.

Caddo Lake State Park sits on the edge of the mysterious 25,000-acre Caddo Lake, where massive bald cypress trees rise from dark, tannin-stained water. The campground offers 46 sites scattered through pine and hardwood forest, with several waterfront spots perfect for launching kayaks into the maze of bayous and sloughs. Sites have water, electric, and picnic tables, with clean restrooms and hot showers nearby. The park stays busy on weekends during spring and fall, but weekdays offer solitude among the Spanish moss.

Access is straightforward on paved Park Road 2, though the narrow park roads can be tight for larger rigs. The real magic happens on the water — rent a canoe at the park store or bring your own to explore the labyrinth of channels where herons stalk and alligators sun themselves on logs. Best visited March through November when water levels are stable and wildlife is active.
