Hartman Rocks Recreation Area — Gunnison Dispersed Camping
Hartman Rocks is a granite-dome and sage playground southwest of Gunnison, Colorado. It is jointly managed by the BLM and the City of Gunnison and is known for mountain biking, 4×4 routes, and climbing. Dispersed camping is allowed in designated sites along the main access roads. Sites are mostly open, with a few tucked against the rocks. There are no hookups and no potable water. Pit toilets sit at the main trailheads, but plan to be self-contained otherwise. Summer weekends are busy with bikers and OHV crowds, and weekdays are quieter.
Access roads are graded dirt and usually fine for any vehicle. Interior routes get rougher and more technical. Winter snow and spring mud can close sections, so check conditions before you commit. Fire restrictions are common in dry summers, and the standard 14-day stay limit applies. Camp only in the marked sites and keep off the vegetation. Confirm current rules with the BLM Gunnison Field Office before you go.
