Squaw Flat Campground — Canyonlands Needles District
Squaw Flat sits in the heart of the Needles District, with two loops of sites worked into slickrock benches and juniper. Expect a small, quiet campground (about two dozen sites) with picnic tables, vault toilets, and seasonal drinking water. Fires are restricted to grills, and there are no hookups, showers, or fuel. Bring everything, including your own water backup. The red-and-white banded spires are right outside your tent flap, and the stars are the kind you forget exist when you live in a city.
It fills fast in spring and fall, so reserve ahead through Recreation.gov or be ready to gamble on a walk-up site. Summer gets brutally hot. Cell service is nonexistent, and the nearest real resupply is Monticello, about 70 miles back up the highway. This is the staging point for Elephant Hill and the Needles backcountry roads, which need a permit and a rig that can handle ledges. Verify fees, water status, and reservation windows with the NPS before you roll. Have a dirty day.
