Parque Nacional Sajama — Lagunas de Huayllacota Valley Floor Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

The Huayllacota wetland zone sits on the eastern flank of Volcán Sajama at roughly 4,300 meters — a wind-scoured, boulder-strewn bofedal (high-altitude wetland) where overlanders pull off the rough dirt track and camp in the open. No facilities, no signs, no neighbors most nights. Vicuñas graze within camera range. The cone of Sajama — Bolivia’s highest peak at 6,542m — fills your entire rearview. Cold drops hard after sundown at altitude, so budget for serious sleeping kit. Cook time doubles at this elevation.

Access is via the dirt track running north from Sajama village toward the thermal pools area — high-clearance 4WD required, especially after afternoon rainstorms that can turn the bofedal approach into a bog. Season runs April through October. Park entry fee required at the Sajama village checkpoint. Coordinate with park rangers in the village; camping is permitted but informal. Cell service is essentially nonexistent.
