Alsek River — Dry Bay Glacier and Tidal Flat Terminus Viewpoint
Dry Bay is the tidal mouth of the Alsek River, where glacial silt meets the Gulf of Alaska in one of the most remote and dramatic river exits on the continent. The surrounding landscape is a braided maze of channels, driftwood beaches, and glacier-calving fronts — Alsek Glacier and Grand Plateau Glacier loom at the edges of visibility. Brown bears, bald eagles, and Dall’s porpoise are common. This is the takeout point for rafters and the logical endpoint for anyone running the Tatshenshini-Alsek corridor overland from Haines. It is not a road-end in the conventional sense — access is via floatplane or the rough coastal track from Yakutat, not by through-driving from Dalton Post.
No developed facilities exist at Dry Bay itself. The USFS Dry Bay Ranger Station is seasonally staffed and serves primarily as a floatplane base for raft party pickups. Confirmed GPS coordinates for the bay mouth are withheld here — on-the-ground navigation by map and air coordination is standard practice. Visit late June through early September when ice conditions allow. Grizzly bear country — hard canister or hang required.
Alsek's end — glaciers meet the Gulf of Alaska.
