Tibbitt Lake — Contwoyto Winter Road Southern Staging Dispersed Camp
Tibbitt Lake sits roughly 70 km northeast of Yellowknife and marks the dead-end of the paved road system before the legendary Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road takes over. In winter this is a staging ground — trucks and expedition rigs park along the gravel margins of the lake access road before rolling onto the ice. Flat tundra terrain, wide open sky, and temperatures that will absolutely humble you. No amenities whatsoever. Cell service drops off hard once you leave the Yellowknife corridor.
Access is via NWT Highway 4 east of Yellowknife, then gravel spur to the lake. This is winter-only territory — the road only exists as a legal ice road from roughly January through March depending on ice thickness certification. Outside that window, the surrounding muskeg is impassable for most vehicles. Check GNWT Department of Infrastructure ice road status before any attempt. Bring everything you need — fuel, food, recovery gear, and cold-weather kit.
End of pavement. Start of ice.
