Tsauchab River — Naukluft Upper Canyon Dispersed Camp
This is the kind of camp that earns its place. The upper Tsauchab River corridor cuts through dramatic Naukluft limestone and dolomite country, and the broad sandy riverbed offers flat, shaded spots under acacia and shepherd’s tree canopy. No infrastructure, no crowds — just gravel, gorge walls, and the occasional oryx drifting through at dusk. You’re inside Namib-Naukluft National Park here, so a valid NWR permit is mandatory before you drop your tent. Capacity is effectively self-limiting — the river flats aren’t huge and the access track can be tight for long rigs.
Access is via the C14/D854 network south of the Naukluft plateau, with the final approach on rough 4WD track through rocky riverbed sections. Dry season (April–October) is the go — summer rains can fill the Tsauchab fast and trap you. Water from the river is non-potable without treatment. Carry everything in. This camp pairs well with the Zebra River Canyon hike and is a natural overnight stop on the Naukluft 4×4 route.
