Arkaroola Ridge-Top Tour — Gammon Ranges Volcanic Spine via Bararranna Gorge and Sillers Lookout

Ancient lava spine above the South Australian outback.

Expert

The Arkaroola Ridge-Top Tour is a 16 km guided and self-drive 4WD track deep in the Gammon Ranges of South Australia’s northern Flinders Ranges, threading across an ancient Precambrian volcanic spine that looks more like Mars than Australia. The route winds from Arkaroola Village to Sillers Lookout — 660 metres above the surrounding plains — via Bararranna Gorge, the Acacia Ridge spine, and a series of tight switchbacks blasted into exposed quartzite. The geology here is genuinely astonishing: metamorphic and granite intrusions compressed into knife-edge ridges over 800 million years. At Sillers Lookout on a clear day you can see the salt flats of Lake Frome shimmering 100 km to the east. That view alone justifies the white knuckles on the descent.

This is a genuine expert track — narrow shelf road, loose rocks, steep ledge drops, and sections where a rollover is a realistic outcome if you drift off-line. A short-wheelbase, high-clearance 4WD with low range is mandatory; long-wheelbase vehicles including standard crew-cab utes are prohibited. No trailers. Solo travel is strongly discouraged. The Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary charges an entry fee and manages the track — check current conditions before heading out as sections close after rain. Fuel and water at Arkaroola Village only. Best season is April to October; summers are brutal and dangerously hot. This is remote South Australia: sat phone or PLB is non-negotiable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive the Ridge-Top Tour in my long-wheelbase 4WD or full-size truck?

No. Long-wheelbase vehicles are prohibited — the switchbacks and ridge-line shelf road physically cannot accommodate them. You need a short-wheelbase, high-clearance 4WD with low range; think 70 Series short-wheel Landcruiser, Jimny, or similar.

What months is the Ridge-Top Tour actually driveable?

April through October is the reliable window — cooler, drier, and far less risk of flash flooding or heat-related vehicle failure. Summer (November–March) brings extreme heat, occasional heavy rain that closes the track, and genuine survival risk in the remote Gammon Ranges.

Do I need a permit, and can I just show up and self-drive it?

You must book through Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary — the track is on private conservation land and access requires a paid booking, either as a guided tour or a self-drive permit issued at the village. No walk-ins or freelancing onto the track.

What's the hardest section and what actually makes it technical?

The ridge-line shelf sections near Sillers Lookout are the crux — narrow exposed ledges with sheer drop-offs, loose volcanic rock, and zero room for error or recovery. It's not about raw horsepower; it's about precise wheel placement at walking pace on camber that wants to slide you off the mountain.

Is there any fuel or cell service on or near the trail, and how far is the nearest town for emergency support?

There is zero cell service the entire route, and no fuel on the trail itself — Arkaroola Village is your only fuel stop, sitting roughly 600 km from Adelaide and over 400 km from Leigh Creek. Fill up at the village before you go out and carry a satellite communicator; a breakdown on that ridge is a serious situation.
