Devils Sinkhole State Natural Area — Volcanic Collapse Cave and Bat Flight Viewpoint
Devils Sinkhole is a vertical cave shaft punched into the Edwards Plateau limestone northwest of Rocksprings, Edwards County. The collapse opening is roughly 40 feet across and drops 140 feet straight down into a cavern chamber that stretches another 350 feet horizontally. It’s home to one of Texas’s largest bat colonies — millions of Mexican free-tailed bats spiral out at dusk in a column that can last 20 minutes. Texas Parks and Wildlife manages the site strictly; you cannot wander up unannounced. Guided tours depart from the Devils Sinkhole Discovery Center in Rocksprings.
For overlanders running the TAT corridor through Edwards County, this is the single most memorable POI between Uvalde and the Pecos River. Tours run seasonally spring through fall; bat flights peak June–August. Book ahead — capacity is limited and slots fill on weekends. No dispersed access to the sinkhole itself.
Millions of bats erupt from solid limestone.
