Chyulu Hills — Shetani Lava Flow Viewpoint
Shetani means ‘devil’ in Swahili, and when you pull up to this sprawling black basalt field and realize it was still molten just a few hundred years ago, the name makes sense. The lava flow spilled out of the Chyulu Hills volcanic chain and covers a massive swathe of ground between the hills and Tsavo West — twisted, jagged, impossible terrain that swallowed livestock and terrified the Maasai who witnessed it. Stand on the edge and look south toward Tsavo and you’re staring at one of the youngest geological features in East Africa. Kilimanjaro floats above the horizon on a clear morning.
Access is via the Chyulu Hills National Park interior track off the Mtito Andei–Amboseli corridor. High-clearance 4WD required. The surrounding area is KWS-managed — check in at the gate, carry your own water, and stay aware of elephant movement through this corridor. Dry season (June–October) is the call.
Africa's youngest lava field, still cooling.
