Mile marker posts help navigation, but the real challenge is reading sand conditions—firm packed wet sand near the waterline offers the best traction, while dry sugar sand above the tide line will bog down anything without proper technique and momentum.

High-clearance 4WD with aired-down tires is mandatory, and even then you’ll likely get stuck at least once learning the sand’s moods. Tide charts are essential—attempt this route only on outgoing or low tide when the beach is widest and firmest. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, but summer heat can be brutal with no shade. Pack recovery gear, extra water, and a portable air compressor.
