Lençóis Maranhenses presents 600 square miles of white sand dunes punctuated by turquoise freshwater lagoons that fill during rainy season, creating Brazil’s most surreal landscape. The traverse from Atins to Santo Amaro requires constant momentum through sugar-fine sand that swallows vehicles to their axles, with navigation by GPS essential as dune crests shift weekly. Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita serve as waypoints between technical climbs up 130-foot dunes where one wrong line means hours of digging out.
Extreme difficulty demands aired-down tires, sand ladders, and serious recovery gear — this isn’t Moab sandstone but Sahara-soft powder that punishes hesitation. Dry season (July-December) offers firm sand but empty lagoons; wet season (January-June) fills the pools but turns crossings into quicksand nightmares. No permits needed but fuel/water must be cached as nearest services are 4+ hours away. Wild camping beside lagoons during full moon creates an otherworldly experience, but bring mosquito nets — the bugs are biblical. You’ll either master sand driving or get humbled trying.

Can a stock Hilux or Land Cruiser run this trail without modifications?
No. Stock tires will bury you. You need a dedicated 4WD with proper sand tires (paddle or aggressive low-pressure all-terrains), a high-lift jack, and traction boards at minimum. A snorkel is strongly recommended given the lagoon crossings and humid conditions.
When are the lagoons actually full and worth the trip?
July through December is peak season — the rainy season (January–June) fills the lagoons, and by July they're at their most spectacular. Arrive before September for the fullest water. Outside this window many lagoons are dry or shallow and the dunes become even more punishing with no water reward.
Do you need a permit to drive through Lençóis Maranhenses National Park?
Yes. The trail runs through a federally protected national park managed by ICMBio (Brazil's national park authority). Vehicles require an entry permit and must be accompanied by a licensed local guide — independent self-guided traverses are not officially permitted. Arrange this through operators in Barreirinhas before you arrive.
What's the hardest section and what makes it so difficult?
The central dune fields between roughly km 20–40 are the crux — back-to-back steep dune faces with no firm base, constant risk of getting stuck on the leeward side, and no recovery anchor points for miles. Momentum management and reading wind-packed versus loose sand in real time is the skill that separates a clean run from a multi-hour dig-out.
Is there any place to resupply fuel or water along the 45 miles?
No. There are no fuel stops or potable water sources on the traverse itself. Barreirinhas is your last fuel point — carry enough for the full 72 km plus a reserve, accounting for the brutal fuel consumption of continuous low-range sand driving. Bring all drinking water you need for 2–3 days; lagoon water is not safe to drink without treatment.
